Coal Mountain Elementary was established in 1981 to serve kindergarten through sixth grade students. It replaced the original Coal Mountain School, which closed in 1955. Both schools are situated along Highway 369—once known as Old Federal Road—an essential east-west route that historically served as the first postal path west of the Chattahoochee River.
Interestingly, while there’s no evidence of coal reserves in the area, the school’s name was inspired by an early resident who, eager to spur development, claimed the land was rich with coal. This colorful tale adds a touch of mystery and local charm to the school’s history.
The first principal of the new school was Mr. Steve Benson, who laid the foundation for what would become a thriving institution. Since its opening, Coal Mountain Elementary has expanded and evolved with three major additions and renovations, ensuring it continues to meet the needs of its growing community.
